KDX and URLs

KDX and URLs

Can KDX open URLs from chat, messages etc?

Yes, anywhere that you see a URL in selectable text, you can hold down the control key (command on Mac) and click the URL to open it. This works for any type of URL that your operating system recognizes.

Does KDX support "kdx://address" URLs?

Yes, but your operating system may need to be configured before it will recognize KDX URLs (see instructions following). Here are some examples of KDX URLs:

Configuring MS Windows for KDX URLs

You will need to make some additions to the Windows Registry. To make this easier, Haxial provides a ".reg" file containing the required additions. Applying the ".reg" file is as simple as double-clicking it (opening the file in the usual way). MS Windows asks you if you want to add it to the registry, and you click "Yes".

HOWEVER, YOU MUST MODIFY THE .REG FILE BEFORE USING IT. The .reg file contains the path/location of the copy of the KDX Client program ("KDXClient.exe") that you want to use to open URLs. Haxial does not know where on your hard disk you decided to store your copy of KDX, so you must modify the .reg file to make it specify the correct path/location.

  1. Download this file: registry-kdx-urls.reg

  2. Open the file using Haxial TextEdit or Notepad so that you can edit it.

  3. The following text appears multiple times in the .reg file. Everywhere it appears, you will need to replace it with the path/location of your copy of KDX Client. You might use a Find & Replace feature in the text editor program.
          C:\\KDX Folder\\KDXClient.exe

  4. Important: MS Windows paths/locations are normally written with a single backslash ('\') between directories. However, the .reg file requires that you write DOUBLE backslashes between directories, as seen above.

  5. To find the location of your copy of KDX, first find it as you normally would, then second-click on its icon to show the context menu, then click "Properties", and the location is displayed where it says "Location".

  6. So if your copy of KDX Client is actually located at, for example:
          C:\Stuff\KDX\KDXClient.exe
Then in the .reg file, you will need to replace (everywhere that it appears):
          C:\\KDX Folder\\KDXClient.exe
    With:
          C:\\Stuff\\KDX\\KDXClient.exe

  7. Save the .reg file and close it in the text editor program.

  8. Double-click the .reg file to open it in the usual way.

  9. MS Windows asks you if you want to apply the changes to the registry. Click Yes.

  10. All done! That wasn't nearly as painful as pulling your own toenails off with pliars!

Configuring MacOS X for KDX URLs

No configuration is necessary, but note that MacOS X may become confused if you try to open a URL when you have multiple copies of the KDX Client program on your computer. To avoid confusion, make sure there is only 1 copy of the KDX Client program.
