A major contributing reason why the next Mac version of KDX has been delayed so much is because Apple keeps chopping and changing their programming interfaces willy-nilly, and it makes it difficult for us developers to keep up with their constant capricious changes in direction.

For example, Apple introduced a programming interface called the "Human Interface Toolbox" in MacOS 10.2 but then abandoned it in MacOS 10.5. That is just one example of many programming interfaces that Apple has asked developers to use and then later abandoned.

Apple has abandoned and changed their programming interfaces so much so that the Mac-specific code in the next Mac version of KDX is forced to be a complete rewrite. None of the previous Mac-specific code is usable anymore because of Apple's abandonments and changes. This has substantially delayed progress.

This explains why the MS Windows version of Haxial Compiler / KRE (the foundation/core of KDX 2) has been released but not the Mac version yet.

Some people are experiencing an incompatibility between KDX and MacOS 10.5 Leopard, where file transfers stall. Haxial is working on fixing this incompatibility. In the meantime, there is a temporary workaround you can use.

  • For KDX Server: Use the MacUnix version of KDX Server.
Please note that in the MacUnix version, if you use the Delete command on an alias/link, it deletes the original not the alias/link. [More Info] [Download]

  • For KDX Client on Intel Macs:
Download KDX Client for MS Windows, decompress (unzip), and drop the KDXClient.exe program file into your normal KDX folder, and run it in MacOS using Crossover or WINE, as a temporary workaround until the fixed version is released. Crossover is US$60 but there is a free trial. WINE is free.

  • Or continue to use MacOS 10.4 until the new version of KDX is released, then upgrade to MacOS 10.5.

For anyone interested, KDX development is discussed on the Haxial Software Engineering Discussion mailing list. You can subscribe to it on the following webpage (not a clickable link to avoid spam). Please note that the discussion regularly includes highly technical discussions.

So far, 4 alpha versions of KDX 2 (codename KRE) have been privately released to some people for testing. The 6th version will probably be available to the general public (for testing/experimentation only, not a usable product).

It is based on a new simplified programming language, the KDX language (KL). You can write your own programs or scripts in KL and compile them using the included KL Compiler, if you want.
